just gonna talk about skullgirls’ story for a bit
i really want there to be a full canon campaign story mode in skullgirls. i’ve never played blazblue and i’ve only played a little of P4A, but from what i understand both of those games actually have real story modes! the story modes in skullgirls are okay but they’re basically just glorified arcade modes. they give you a very basic rundown of the character you’re playing as and what their goals are, toss you into a few battles, then have you fight the skullgirl and the story is wrapped up pretty fast. it’s nice but it feels more like a vignette than anything…
that is until squigly’s story mode happened and it felt less like a small throwaway character-building thing and more like an actual piece of a larger story? what set squigly’s story mode apart from the others is that all of the other story modes are a single character’s personal journey and they’re all like a separate canon as a result. but squigly’s story didn’t feel that way? i dunno i’m bad at explaining things without spoiling what happens in her story mode just play it.
This is why I hope SG gets a non-fighter spinoff someday. I know it’s a slim chance, and I know Ahad had his heart set on this project being a fighter, but… So far the game’s storymodes have been woefully underwhelming.
SG clearly has the makings of a really good story within it, but it’s been pushed very far to the wayside and the consequence is rushed and incoherent pacing within the individual storymodes.
I mean, hey. Don’t get me wrong, I love em. But from what I can observe it looks like Skullgirls’ story modes will continue to be only short vignettes with little context as long as they continue to be exclusive to the main game.
